Calprotectin is a protein found in human blood, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, and urine during inflammation. When detected in the stool, calprotectin has a direct relationship (a consequence of neutrophil degranulation) to bowel mucosal damage, characteristic of inflammatory bowel disease. Elevated fecal calprotectin indicates the migration of neutrophils to the intestinal mucosa, which occurs during intestinal inflammation, including inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Anti-Human calprotectin serum is used to measure fecal calprotectin using immunochemical techniques such as ELISA or immunochromatographic assays for diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases, coeliac disease, infectious colitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, intestinal cystic fibrosis, and colorectal cancer.
